How to pick one that actually lands
A team name has exactly one moment: when the host reads the scores. Everything about choosing one follows from that.
- Keep it short. Four or five words. A host reading a fourteen-word name in round three will shorten it, and the shortened version is the one you are stuck with all night.
- Make it sayable. If it only works written down — a spelling joke, a pun that needs the letters visible — it dies out loud.
- Pitch it at the room. A reference the whole pub gets beats a sharper one only your table understands.
- Go topical if you can. Whatever happened that week is the name nobody else will have thought of, and it is the one the host remembers.
Common questions
What makes a good pub quiz team name?
Something the host can read out loud without stumbling. A name only works at the moment scores are announced, so length is the main enemy — four or five words is the ceiling. A pun on a name everyone in the room knows beats a clever reference only your table gets.
Should the name be rude?
Almost never worth it. Most pub quizzes have families or work colleagues in the room, and a host who has to skip your name to avoid reading it out has taken away the only payoff the name has. Cheeky travels; crude usually does not.
Do team names ever win you anything?
Some hosts award a point for the best name, and it costs nothing to run. If you are hosting, it is a good way to get late-arriving tables invested before the first round starts.
How many people should be in a quiz team?
Between four and six is the sweet spot. Fewer and you have gaps in your general knowledge; more and half the table stops paying attention. Many venues cap team size for exactly that reason.
What is a good team name for a work quiz?
One that pokes fun at office life rather than at anyone in it. Jargon is a rich seam — Per My Last Email, Sorry, You're On Mute — because everyone in the room recognises it and nobody is the butt of the joke. Keep it to something you would be happy for your manager to hear read out.
What are good team names for a school or kids' quiz?
Short, punny and easy to shout: The Know-It-Owls, Clever Clogs, Dino-Mite Minds. Children like names that sound like a superhero squad, and a head teacher reading the scores needs nothing to explain.
Can we change our team name halfway through the quiz?
Usually, if you ask the host before the scores are read out. Some tables do it deliberately and change the name to a joke about their position after each round — it only works if the host is keeping score on paper or on a screen they can edit.
Now you need the questions
There are free quiz rounds with answers covering general knowledge, football, music, film and more, a guide to hosting a pub quiz if you are running the night, and the QuizCast app if you would rather put the whole thing on a TV and let people answer from their phones.
